Dr. Diarmuid Quinlan, during the Irish College of GPs national conference, emphasised that the costs of building new practices are beyond many GPs, especially young doctors. Of note, with Ireland needing 6,000 GPs and currently having just over 4,000, this shortfall is particularly acute in rural areas. Dr. Quinlan also outlined in his speach “GPs are scared off by the financial risks of setting up practices in parts of the country affected by the doctor shortage and need support with “bricks and mortar”.”
